Data recovery prices: what determines the price?

Trying things yourself is a MISTAKE you cannot undo. If your data matters, do not touch it.

Every attempt you make can turn recoverable data into data that can no longer be recovered.

The price of data recovery is determined by the type of fault, the donor parts needed, the difficulty and duration of the work, and urgency. That is why we do not give everyone the same list price: we examine your device and send you the exact price in writing. If you do not accept the quote, you get your device back without paying. Below you can find what affects the price and how the quote works.

Four factors that determine the price

  • Type of fault: a corrupted file system and a failed read head require different work.
  • Donor parts needed: on disks that need a head or board replacement, sourcing the part affects the cost.
  • Difficulty and duration of the work: copying can take a long time on disks with bad sectors or a large capacity.
  • Urgency: how quickly you want the job done affects the scheduling. If you want urgent service, say so when you make your request.

Why don't we give a list price?

Two disks of the same model can arrive with very different faults. In one, only the file system is corrupted; in the other, the read heads have failed. Stating a firm price without seeing the fault would either make you pay more than necessary or tie us to an unrealistic promise. We see the fault first, then give you the price in writing.

The amount of data recovered does not determine the price on its own either. A small file system problem on a one-terabyte disk can be much simpler than a head failure on a disk of a few hundred gigabytes.

Is a service fee the same as a recovery fee?

No. Some companies highlight a low inspection or service fee and only tell you the data recovery fee later. Ask three questions when you get a quote:

  • What does this fee cover?
  • Is there an extra charge if the data is recovered?
  • What do I pay if I do not accept the quote?

With us, the price is sent in writing after the analysis, and if you do not accept the quote you get your device back without paying. For some requests the analysis may fall outside the free scope; in that case the fee is communicated to you when you make your request.

How does the quote work?

If you do not accept the quote after the analysis, you get your device back without paying. In cases where it cannot be foreseen at which stage the data will become reachable, the price may be set after the data has been recovered, based on the time and resources spent on the work. In that case you are under no obligation to pay. Not every case falls within the free analysis scope. For requests outside the free analysis scope, you receive written information about the analysis fee before any work begins. For all the steps of the process, see our process page.

What can you do to reduce the time and the loss without affecting the price?

Switching off the faulty device instead of trying it again and again often makes the job easier. As the damage grows, the work becomes more complex. If you are not sure what symptom you are seeing, see our first 10 minutes page.

Frequently asked questions

Can you tell me the price over the phone?

It is not possible to give an accurate price without knowing the type of fault. If you describe the situation, we will tell you what to do. The exact price is sent in writing after the analysis.

Is the analysis free?

For some requests the analysis may fall outside the free scope; in that case the fee is communicated to you in writing when you make your request.

Is the price based on the amount of data recovered?

No. The price is determined by the type of fault, the difficulty of the work and the time and resources spent on it.

Do I pay anything if I don't accept the quote?

No. If you do not accept the quote after the analysis, you get your device back without paying.
